Isamu Noguchi, 1951.

Akari 1AD.

Starting in 1951, the American-Japanese artist and designer Isamu Noguchi created the Akari Light Sculptures, more than 100 models in total handmade in rice paper, as table, floor or ceiling lamps. To designate these lamps, he chose the word "akari", a Japanese expression that means clarity and light and also includes the concept of lightness.

"Akari's light is like sunlight filtering through shoji paper. The harshness of electric light is transformed, thanks to the magic of paper, into the light of our origins, the sun, so that its heat continues to fill our rooms at night". (Isamu Noguchi)
