The A331 pendant lamp was first produced for the interior of the University of Jyväskylä. Decorative and sculptural, even when turned off, the light of this lamp known as the beehive is one of Aalto's jewels and the most appreciated to place in the home, being the most popular in the Artek catalog. For Alvar Aalto, lamp design and architecture go hand in hand. Aalto lamps are almost always part of a large architectural project. On the other hand, in Aalto's lamps we can find the same principles as in its architecture. When planning the rooms, great attention was paid to where the windows and the lamp that illuminates the room had to be placed. In the beehive lamp we can clearly see a reference to Aalto's architecture. The lamp has a structure that allows light to diffuse through the brass elements that join the aluminum sheets. Thanks to brass, the light becomes warm. It was very important to Aalto that the light from the lamp was warm, which is why he uses brass a lot.
