Side table designed by George Nakashima for Knoll.
Splay Table is a table that stands out for a unique shape that does not leave indifferent, mixing different shades of solid walnut wood, contrasting with a clearer board than the edges and base.
The Splay-Leg side table designed by Nakashima for Knoll, mixes Eastern and Western aesthetics, traditional and modern vocabulary. George Nakashima's work defies typical categorization. He is one of the most recognized artisans of the 20th century, mainly for his handmade furniture and sensitivity to raw materials.
In the early 1940s, Hans and Florence Knoll meet Nakashima, who impressed by the simple elegance of his aesthetic, include a chair and three tables of his design to the Knoll catalog. The first orders were placed in Nakashima's own studio. Production was discontinued in 1955, when Nakashima opted to produce and market all of his designs himself. The legs of this table are a wonderful example of George Nakashima's ability to synthesize traditional influences and modern simplicity.
In collaboration with George Nakashima's daughter, Mira and George Nakashima Studios, KnollStudio reproduces it with the use of three-dimensional scanning software, creating an exact replica of the original handmade since 2008. Nakashima's pieces embody the designer, his art, and craftsmanship.
