In 1940, a curious Alexander Girard was experimenting with different materials such as glass, foam rubber, driftwood or cardboard to create a series of abstract sculptures, including a figure in the shape of a bird hand-carved in apple wood. This is how the Girard Bird figure was born, a design with a bird's beak, legs and tail. These series of sculptures were featured in the July 1945 issue of the American magazine "Arts & Architecture". It then became part of the Girard archive at the Vitra Design Museum. The new collection of Vitra objects, brings back this classic Girard Bird design by producing it in maple wood from France.
